Topic: A game about signs

A. Teaching Objectives

Language focus.

1. Asking Wh-questions to find out specific information.(meanings)

e.g  What does this sign mean?

2. Using modal verbs to express prohibition.

e.g  People mustn’t dive.

3. Using imperatives to express prohibition.

e.g. Don’t play with toy boats.

4. Using prepositions to indicate place.

e.g., W usually find this sign near a river or la lake.

B. Ability Objectives:

Make short dialogues about signs.

Write a short passage about “Signs and safety”.

C. Main focus & Difficult points:

1. Describe the meanings of signs by using the different sentence patterns.

…mustn’t …

… is not allowed

Don’t…

2. Write a short passage about signs in our life according to the text.

D. Emotional objectives:

1.       Through learning the meaning of the signs, let students know that it is important to obey the rules for their own safety.

Purpose:

Warm- up

1. A competition: Give students some signs and ask them their meanings.

What does this sign mean?

This sign tells we should turn left here.

There are toilets here.

We mustn’t fish here.

We can park our car here.

We should wash clothes in warm water.

We can have a barbecue here.

2.       Let students divide the four different kinds of signs.

This sign tells us how and where to go

This sign tells us things we must not do.

This sign tells us things we may want to know.

This sign tells us how to do something.

3. Give students three groups of signs. One sign is different from the others, tell it apart.

1.       Students review the meanings of the signs.

2.       Students divide the signs into different kinds.

1.       Review the signs students have already learned.

2.       Arouse the students’ interest.

Pre-task preparation

1. Listen to the text and learn the new words.

Allow

Be allowed, not allow

Students read after the text.

2. Ask students to describe the meaning of the sign using different sentence patterns.

Example: No smoking!

Smoking is not allowed.

Don’t smoke!

We mustn’t smoke!

(fish, walking dogs, touch)

3. Pair work

Do Look and Say. Two students make a short dialogue and use 4 sentence patterns to describe the meaning of the signs:

(No ball games; Fishing is not allowed; Don’t play with toy boats; Throwing coins is not allowed; Don’t drink the water; Don’t leave rubbish.)

1. Students listen to the tape and read after it.

2, Learn to describe the signs using different sentences.

3. Make a short dialogue.

1.Learn the new words through pictures.

2. Learn the new sentence patterns.

3. Through dialogue students practice the new sentence patterns.

While-task procedure

1. Using photos on page 70 as examples: Ask students where they can find these signs?

2. Play the tape, and students listen to the tape.

Questions: What are the students doing?

What do they want to know?

Read after the tape.

3. A competition:  Divide students into 4 groups. The group which gets the highest mark wins the game.

I will give them 9 pictures. Two students make a short dialogue.

v      S1: What does this sign mean?

v      S2: It means… Where can we find this sign?

v      S1: We can find it …

 (We mustn’t cross the street here.

We can’t drink the water.

We can go out here.

There is a barber here.

No smoking!

No pets are allowed here.

Watch out! The floor is wet.

You may slip here. )

Write down their marks.

3.       According to pictures on page 70, let students prepare a short passage about “water safety”.

Ask some students to say the passage orally.

1. Learn the location of the signs.

2. Read the text.

3. Have a competition

 

1. Learn and review the preps.

2. Read the dialogue in groups

 

3. Act out the dialogue. Through competition.

4. Brainstorming. Enrich students’ imagination.

 

Post- task

activities

1. Writing: Write a short passage about “signs and safety”. Describe signs around our life. Let students draw the sign on the blackboard.

v      What does this sign mean?

v      Where can we find the sign?

v      Why should we obey the sign?

Example: This sign means we mustn’t drink the water here! We can find it in a hotel.

We should follow the signs, because the water here is dirty and it will harm our health.

 

1.         Write a short passage about signs.

2.         Draw the signs on the blackboard.

1.       Through writing let students use the new words and sentence.

2.       Using their imagination.

3.       Character building:

A lot of people drowned last year, because they turned a blind eye on the signs near the river.

Every year, many people were killed by traffic accidents. Most of the accidents happened, because people didn’t obey the traffic rules.

We should be good citizens and take the signs seriously for our safety.

Assignment

1. Copy the new words and text. Translate them into Chinese.

2. Write a short passage about “Signs and Safety”.
